Most CRNA programs no longer require the GRE. In our data, 83 of the 154 accredited programs say they don't require it, and only about 23 require it in some form.
Where it is required, a common minimum is about 300 combined on the verbal and quantitative sections. Some programs also set a writing minimum of 3.5 or 4.0. This page covers which programs still ask for it, the test basics and how to prepare.
The trend away from the GRE
Fewer nurse anesthesia programs require the GRE than in the past. Most now lean on your GPA, science grades, ICU experience, CCRN and interview.
Some programs kept a middle path. They waive the GRE above a GPA threshold, or consider it case by case, or list it as recommended.
How many CRNA programs require the GRE?
Everything CRNA's School Finder data (October 2026) shows:
| GRE policy | Programs |
|---|---|
| Not required | 83 |
| Required, no minimum listed | 10 |
| Required, 300 combined | 7 |
| Required, 300 combined and 4.0 writing | 3 |
| Required, 300 combined and 3.5 writing | 3 |
| Case by case (for example, below a GPA cutoff) | 9 |
| Recommended | 7 |
| Not stated or other | 32 |
That's 23 programs that require it in some form, 9 that may require it depending on your record, and 7 that recommend it. Policies change often, so check each program's admissions page before you book a test.

GRE basics
These details come from ETS, which runs the test:
- Sections: Analytical Writing (one essay task), Quantitative Reasoning (two sections) and Verbal Reasoning (two sections).
- Length: about 1 hour 58 minutes.
- Scores: Verbal and Quantitative are each scored 130 to 170. Analytical Writing is scored 0 to 6 in half-point steps.
- Validity: Scores are reportable for five years after your test date.
- Cost: $249 in most parts of the world, including four score reports on test day.
- Retakes: Once every 21 days, up to five times in any rolling 12-month period.
- Where: At a test center or at home.
A "300 combined" minimum means your Verbal plus Quantitative scores must add up to at least 300, such as 150 and 150. Writing is reported separately.
Should you take it if it's optional?
Take it if:
- your GPA or science GPA is near a program's minimum
- a program on your list requires it or considers it case by case
- you test well and want one more strong data point
Skip it if:
- none of your programs require it
- your time is better spent on the CCRN, prerequisites or ICU skills
For most applicants with a solid GPA, a CCRN does more for their application than an optional GRE.
An 8-week prep plan
This plan suits a working ICU nurse aiming for around 300 combined. Adjust it to your starting point.
| Week | Focus |
|---|---|
| 1 | Take a free official practice test to get a baseline. List your weak areas. |
| 2 to 3 | Quant review: arithmetic, algebra, ratios, percentages and data interpretation. Short daily sets. |
| 4 to 5 | Verbal: reading comprehension strategy and vocabulary in context. Keep one quant set a day. |
| 6 | Analytical Writing: learn the scoring guide and write two timed essays. |
| 7 | Second full practice test. Review every missed question. |
| 8 | Light review of weak spots, a final practice test early in the week, then rest. |
Tips:
- Study 30 to 60 minutes on most days rather than cramming on days off.
- Use ETS's official practice material, since it matches the real test.
- Book your test date early and leave room for a retake before deadlines.
Sending scores
Use your test-day score reports for programs you know you'll apply to. If a program uses NursingCAS, send scores using that program's NursingCAS GRE code, and make sure your name and date of birth match exactly. See our NursingCAS guide.
FAQ
What GRE score do I need for CRNA school?
Where a minimum is listed in our data, it's usually 300 combined. Some also require 3.5 or 4.0 in Analytical Writing. Check each program.
Can a high GRE make up for a low GPA?
It can help at programs that use it, especially those that require the GRE below a GPA cutoff. Strong recent science grades usually help more. See CRNA school with a low GPA.
How long are GRE scores valid?
ETS reports scores for five years after your test date. Some programs set a shorter window, so check.
